What is unique about the 'broken' tulips featured?
The 'broken' tulips, such as Semper Augustus and Viceroy, display dramatic streaks and flames of contrasting colours. This highly prized effect was caused by a virus, making these varieties the most valuable during the Tulip Mania.
What is the historical inspiration behind this mural?
This mural is inspired by the Dutch Tulip Mania of 1637 in Haarlem, when tulip bulbs, recently introduced from the Ottoman Empire, became the most expensive objects in the world, with single bulbs trading for the price of houses. It captures the era's fascination and artistic documentation of these extraordinary flowers.
