Tarpa Dance — Scenic Mural Wallpaper
Six lines of provenance.
What the mural describes.
Authentic Warli tribal art in two colours only: rice-white line-work on deep indigo, the stark and luminous discipline of Maharashtra's most ancient pictorial tradition. Three horizontal narrative registers unfold across the composition. In the upper band, the tarpa dance circle commands the centre — eight to twelve triangular stick figures linked hand-to-hand, spiralling outward from a central tarpa player with his wind instrument raised, the spiral formation turning like a living galaxy. To the right of the dance, the tree of life rises with symmetrical branches populated by small bird forms; above, the sun in radiating lines and a crescent moon mark celestial time. A zigzag mountain border divides the upper from the middle register, where a bullock cart procession rolls left to right — paired bullocks with curved horns, circular spoke wheels, a seated driver — and a counter-directional water-carrier procession returns right to left, four women with water pots balanced on their heads in identical dignified posture. Between the processions, a hunter draws his bow in a single diagonal of tension toward a deer caught mid-stride. A dot-and-dash border and a river-with-fish band lead to the lower register, where a warli hut cluster anchors the scene domestically — triangular roofs, spiral smoke — with peacocks fanning their radiating tail-feathers between the huts. Spiral motifs mark the border intersections. Every line has the warmth and slight irregularity of a hand-held mark.
The two-colour discipline makes this pattern extraordinarily versatile — it reads as commanding graphic design in a contemporary loft, as cultural identity in an Indian home, as unexpected depth in a powder room or reading nook. Pair with warm natural wood furniture, handwoven Indian textiles, brass and copper accents, and earth-toned ceramics. Adjacent walls in deep indigo or warm white. Printed to your exact wall measurements as a seamless repeat on matt non-woven paste-the-wall paper. Bespoke commissions available.
