The Composition

What the mural describes.

Open the Lindisfarne Gospels and step directly onto a carpet page, where the entire surface vibrates with a mesmerising tapestry of interlocking knotwork. Ribbons of rich Insular Red, vibrant Verdigris Green, deep Woad Blue, and luminous Orpiment Gold weave over and under one another on a warm Vellum ground, creating patterns of impossible complexity that have neither beginning nor end. Elongated dogs, elegant birds, and sinuous serpents emerge from the interlace, their forms flowing seamlessly into the endless ribbons, their Zoomorph Brown bodies adding another layer of ancient mystery to this meticulously crafted design. The composition is a triumph of mathematical precision and organic freedom, a visual symbol of eternity that rewards slow, contemplative attention.

Questions

Asked of the studio.

What is the inspiration behind the Celtic Knotwork mural?

This design is inspired by the intricate 'carpet pages' found in Insular illuminated manuscripts, particularly the Lindisfarne Gospels from around 700 AD. It captures the essence of Celtic knotwork, a decorative system developed in Ireland and northern Britain.

What kind of patterns are featured in this mural?

The mural showcases continuous interlace patterns, where ribbons weave endlessly without a discernible beginning or end. It also incorporates zoomorphic forms such as elongated dogs, birds, and serpents whose bodies are integrated into the knotwork itself.
