On burnished gold silk (#b89840) the tropics are reimagined through the lens of a master silk painter working in the chinoiserie tradition. A keel-billed toucan occupies the centre — black body, sulphur-yellow bib, rainbow bill of green, orange, red and blue-black catching warm light against the gold ground like a living jewel set in precious metal. To his left, a scarlet tanager perches on a fern frond, pure vermilion against jet-black wings. Hovering near a flower, a violet-crowned hummingbird is caught in that impossible stillness-within-motion — iridescent crown shifting in the light, wings a translucent blur, needle beak reaching for nectar. In the lower register, a red-eyed tree frog clings to a broad leaf, lime-green body and scarlet eyes a tiny shock of colour, orange toes splayed with adhesive precision — finding it feels like discovering a secret. Cascading magenta bougainvillea tumbles from the upper canopy, weightless and extravagant; pale lavender orchids cling to a trunk with elegant parasitic precision; an enormous monstera leaf spreads its perforated geometry across the mid-ground; tree fern fronds unscroll at the edges, their fiddleheads still partly coiled. The gold ground lends warmth to every element, making the greens deeper, the reds more intense, the purples more regal.
