Autumn Canopy Overhead — Scenic Mural Wallpaper
Six lines of provenance.
What the mural describes.
The viewpoint is that of someone who has stopped walking and lain back into the leaf litter, looking directly up through the canopy. From this position, sugar maple branches fill the upper frame on all sides, their leaves backlit by sky so that each lobe glows like stained glass — amber through burnt rust to old gold, veins readable as darker lines within translucent tissue, overlapping colours deepening to near-copper where leaves touch. Red oak branches occupy the upper right, their broader leaves more leathery and burnished, a darker warmth against the maples' luminosity. A beech spray descends from the upper centre, its smaller leaves the brightest clear gold in the composition — the high note in the chord of amber, rust and gold. Between the canopy clusters, a pale blue-white sky opens in an irregular window, and through it a small bird — a warbler or wren — crosses in silhouette, the only cool tone in an entirely warm painting. Below the canopy, the middle air is inhabited by movement: a single maple leaf, detached and turning, reveals both its vivid amber face and paler veined underside; around it, eight or ten more leaves drift at every angle and height, some spinning, some flat, some edge-on and nearly invisible, each at a different stage of its fall. At the left edge, close bark detail on the nearest trunk shows ridged grey-brown with patches of pale lichen and a spot of bright orange lichen. At the base, a carpet of fallen leaves — fresh gold through dried brown — covers the ground, the destination that gives every falling leaf its meaning.
