The Composition

What the mural describes.

At the centre of the composition, a roe deer doe stands in a pool of dappled golden-green light, one foreleg slightly raised, ears forward, dark eyes wide and gentle — paused mid-step, deciding whether to stay. Her tawny coat is speckled with the golden-green confetti of sunlight through a canopy of oak and birch. At her feet, a fawn sits with legs folded and white spots bright against russet fur, looking in a different direction from its mother — the contrast between watchfulness and oblivion telling the whole story of parenthood in a single tableau. A rabbit occupies the lower right, ears upright and round as a warm stone. On a low branch at the right, a tawny owl perches with half-closed eyes, magnificently grumpy in the indignity of daylight, its brown-gold-cream barring a masterwork of watercolour layering; tucked in the crook of the same branch, a bird's nest holds three pale blue eggs. A fox cub peeks from behind a mossy log in the lower left — only face and forepaws visible, ears enormous, amber eyes bright with curiosity, a secret shared between painting and viewer. Beside the log, three fly agaric toadstools — fairy-tale perfect but botanically honest, gills visible beneath the largest red cap. A haze of bluebells carpets the middle distance in violet-blue wash, and through them a speckled wood butterfly catches a shaft of light. The hedgehog is almost entirely hidden in the leaf litter: only a black nose and bright eye give it away.

This mural transforms a child's room, garden room or living space into a still place — the kind of room where the light always seems to fall gently and something good is always about to happen.
