A corridor of old-growth pines opens before you: near-black trunks rise from left and right in asymmetric clusters, their bark fissured with lichen and weather, while a solitary pine stands apart at centre, its wind-shaped crown leaning with the authority of something that has weathered centuries. Between the two groups, the forest breathes — ribbons of cold fog thread between the trunks at mid-height, erasing the line between tree and air, and a pine bough enters from the lower edge to place the viewer firmly inside the scene rather than before it. A mountain thrush perches on a bare branch of the leftmost tree, nearly indistinguishable from the bark; dark ferns unfurl at the base of the solo pine. The entire composition is painted in a cool watercolour ink-wash — charcoal, blue-grey and muted green — each receding plane progressively lighter until the distant mountains dissolve to pale ghost-grey.
