Beneath three gilded Roman arches open to a sunset sky, the mythological assembly convenes: Apollo stands at centre in golden-draped contrapposto, lyre in hand, laurel-crowned, his flesh rendered with the luminous Raphael modelling that seems to emit its own amber light. To his left, two Muse figures converse — one with a scroll unfurled, focused and inward, the other in deep rose robes; beside them a classical warrior stands in Romanesque armour, plumed helmet, at respectful attention. A serpent coils at the base of a column. To the right, a contemplative Muse reclines. In the middle distance, a centaur rears through the arch opening, wild against the painted sky; Cupid flies above with bow drawn, trailing desire across the scene. A bay laurel tree rises behind Apollo; an elaborate gilded arabesque frieze runs the full width of the lower register. The palette is richly Renaissance: lapis blue curtains and sky, burnished gold ornament, warm flesh against cool stone, deep rose and ivory drapery.
